Why traditional planners fail in overwhelmed seasons
I have always loved the idea of a planner.
I’ve bought the $5 planners.
I’ve bought the pretty ones.
I’ve even bought the $60 “this will change my life” planners.
And every time, I start off the same way: motivated, excited, filling in all the boxes, convinced this time will be different.
Sometimes I stick with it for a few weeks. Once, I even made it about four months — which is honestly my personal record.
But eventually… I stop.
Life gets busy.
I miss a few days.
Then a week.
Then opening it feels overwhelming.
And suddenly the planner that was supposed to help me feels like proof that I’m failing.
Traditional planners are built for an ideal version of life — not the one most of us are actually living.
They assume:
- your energy is consistent
- you can predict your days in advance
- interruptions are minimal
- unfinished plans are the exception, not the norm
Because your life doesn’t look like anyone else’s, a one-size-fits-all system was never going to work. When planners are not working and your mind already feels full, it’s easy to assume the problem is you. And those assumptions quietly work against you.
The problem? I need a planner. Not having one stresses me out. My brain feels messy without something to hold all the things.
But traditional planners just weren’t working for real life.

If you’re more of a list person, you might relate to this too → why to-do lists don’t work for moms
What I started doing instead
At some point, without really planning to, I started doing something different.
At the end of the day…or in the middle of the day… or sometimes the end of the week… I would write down what I had already done.
Not what I meant to do.
What I actually did.
Things like:
- cooked a meal
- did our reading lessons
- did our math lessons
- Folded laundry (read more about my non folding laundry system here)
- read aloud to the kids
- answered emails
- cleaned the kitchen (again)
- got the mail
- bathed the kids
- worked out
- handled appointments
Sometimes the list was long.
Sometimes it was short.
But every time, I looked at it and thought:
“Oh… I did more than I realized.”
And that feeling was completely different than opening a planner full of empty boxes and missed plans.
Instead of guilt, I felt accomplished.
Instead of behind, I felt steady.
That’s exactly why I created a reverse daily planner.
Not to plan a perfect future — but to gently acknowledge the life you’re already living.
If you want to see what that looks like in practice, I’ve linked it below.

The moment it clicked
One day it hit me:
Why do planners only work forward?
Why are we constantly measuring ourselves by what didn’t happen instead of what did?
Yes — sometimes we need calendars.
Yes — sometimes we need appointments written down.
But what about the moms who:
- feel overwhelmed
- feel behind
- feel like they’re busy all day but never moving forward
- feel like they’re “not doing enough”
Traditional planners quietly reinforce that feeling.
Reverse planning does the opposite.
Because instead of measuring intention,it measures reality.

What reverse planning actually does
A reverse planner is simple:
You write down what you did after you do it.
Side note: Having a pen you enjoy actually makes this habit easier to stick with. These are my all-time favorites if you’re curious. These ones are a close 2nd.
That’s it.
No pressure to predict the future.
No guilt when plans change.
No abandoned pages staring back at you.
It helps you:
- see your real progress
- recognize invisible work
- document learning (for homeschool moms)
- prove to yourself that your days matter
- feel accomplished instead of behind
I’m also working on a reverse homeschool planner version for moms who need something simple for records and portfolios — coming soon!
Even on days where all you write is:
got out of bed
drank coffee
survived
That still counts.
But if we’re being honest… most days, you’re doing far more than that.
You just don’t stop long enough to see it.
This is not a planner that will magically organize your life or make every day productive.
It’s a tool for noticing what already is — especially in seasons where survival counts as success.
Who this kind of planner is for
This kind of planner is especially helpful if:
- normal planners make you feel guilty
- your life doesn’t fit neatly into time blocks
- you’re raising kids
- homeschooling
- juggling work and home
- mentally carrying 1,000 invisible tasks
- or constantly wondering “what did I even do today?”
You are doing more than you think.
You just haven’t had a system that shows you.
Why I created my own reverse daily planner
I wanted something that felt:
- simple
- uncluttered
- calm
- realistic
- forgiving
Not another complicated productivity system.
Just a quiet place to record real life.
So I made one.
It’s undated.
It’s clean.
It’s flexible.
And it’s designed to work with messy seasons, not against them.
Final thought
You are not lazy.
You are not behind.
You are not failing at life.
You are living it.
And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do…
is look backward and see how far you’ve already come.
If you’ve ever felt like planning just isn’t working for you, there’s a deeper reason for that.
If this way of thinking feels relieving instead of heavy, you don’t have to stop here.
You can have a calmer start to next week.
