Organization tips I wish I knew before our first year

After six years of homeschooling, I’ve learned something the hard way:
It’s not the curriculum that causes burnout, it’s the systems.
The daily friction.
The missing supplies.
The constant setup and cleanup.
The “we were just about to start but now we can’t find a pencil” moments.
So today I’m sharing the simple, real-life systems that completely changed our homeschool days and made stress-free homeschooling feel possible, calmer, smoother, and dare I say… even enjoyable.
These are the things I wish someone had told me when we were just starting. But because homeschooling doesn’t look the same in every home, the systems that work for one family won’t always work for another. That said, these are simple enough to adapt and make work for your family.
1. Flood Your House With Pencils (Seriously)
This sounds silly… until you’ve lived it.
I used to sit down ready to start school, open a pencil pouch, and realize:
No pencils.
Then we’d search the house.
Kids would get distracted.
I’d get irritated.
And the whole rhythm of the day was already off.
So I changed one thing:
I buy pencils in bulk — already sharpened.
I keep them in a giant zip‑top bag on a high shelf. When pencil bags are empty, I refill them in seconds.
No searching.
No delays.
No frustration.
What to look for:
- Pre‑sharpened pencils
- Bulk packs (100+)
- Good erasers

2. Use One “Everything” Pencil Bag Per Child
Each of my kids has one sturdy pencil pouch that holds:
- Pencils
- Eraser
- Scissors
- Markers
- Crayons
- Colored pencils
- Dry‑erase markers
- And yes… sometimes a pack of gum 😅 (If I’m in a patient mood, gum helps them focus. If I’m not… we skip it…the chomping annoys me #realtalk.)
I seriously love these bags. Each kids has a different color and I even use it for my simple make up routines (you can read about my make up routine here)
The point is:
Everything they need to start school lives in one place.
No running to drawers.
No digging through bins.
No excuses.

3. Put Your Entire Homeschool on Wheels

This was a game‑changer for our home. We do not space for a designated “home school room.”
Instead, we use a rolling cart for all of our homeschool supplies.
When school starts → roll it out.
When school ends → roll it away.
In our old house it went into a closet. Now it goes into the laundry room.
And when it’s out of sight?
My brain rests.
No visual clutter.
No constant reminder of unfinished lessons.
No messy table all day (I mean…no homeschool messes, but of course messy still exists with kids!)
4. Use Magazine Holders for Each Subject
Instead of stacking books everywhere, we use magazine holders on our cart:
- One for handwriting & spelling
- One for my son’s math
- One for my daughter’s math
- One for reading
- One for extras
Each child can grab their subject and go.
It keeps everything vertical, visible, and organized — without fancy shelving.
5. Whiteboards + Markers in the Pencil Bag
Whiteboards are magic.
They:
- Reduce paper waste
- Make kids less afraid of mistakes
- Keep learning playful
- Work for math, spelling, handwriting, and games
- They’re small but helpful distractions for kids under 5. (Get more ideas for homeschooling with toddlers.)
We keep:
- A small whiteboard for each child
- Dry‑erase markers inside their pencil pouch
No extra bin required.
6. Magnetic Bookmarks (and Giant Paper Clips)
This is one of those tiny things that saves a surprising amount of time.
I buy magnetic bookmarks in bulk and keep them in our homeschool cart.
We use them for:
- My teaching manuals
- Kids’ math books
- Reading books
- Any workbook we’re using daily
No flipping through pages.
No “where were we again?”
No losing our place.
If you don’t want magnetic bookmarks, giant paper clips work just as well and are usually cheaper.
It’s such a small change — but it removes one more little stress point from the day.
7. Organization = Less Yelling (Ask Me How I Know)
I used to think I needed:
- Better discipline
- More patience
- A new curriculum
But what I really needed was:
Fewer daily obstacles.
When supplies are ready…
When everything has a place…
When starting school doesn’t feel chaotic…
Everyone behaves better — including me.

It helps me so much that I turned it into a printable planner you can use at home or digitally.

Simple Homeschool Supplies That Made the Biggest Difference
Here’s a quick list if you want to simplify your setup:
- Bulk pre‑sharpened pencils
- Large pencil pouches
- Rolling utility cart
- Magazine holders
- Small whiteboards
- Dry‑erase markers
- Magnetic bookmarks or jumbo paper clips
You don’t need a Pinterest‑perfect homeschool room.
You just need systems that remove friction. What works in one season (or one family) might not work in another, and that’s completely normal.
Final Thoughts
Homeschooling doesn’t have to feel heavy.
Small changes in organization can:
- Reduce stress
- Save time
- Prevent burnout
- Make learning more enjoyable for everyone
If you’re in the early years and feeling overwhelmed — I promise, it gets easier. And I’m still in the thick of homeschooling with littles (read about tips & tricks here) too, so I’m right there with you.
And sometimes the solution really is just… more pencils.
